The total number of nonnative in Beijing has topped 4 million, which means that there is one out of every four people in Beijing, according to the latest statistics released by Beijing Statistics Bureau.

Beijing Statistics Bureau recently completed the survey on the mobility of people from outside the city in 2003 with the situation on November 1, 2003 as the sample. The result shows that there were totally 4.095 million people from outside Beijing, 229,000 more than in 2002 and over half of them have been living in Beijing for more than one year.

The number of those who work and do business in Beijing has exceeded 3 million to reach 3.185 million, accounting for 77.8 percent of the total, 220,000 more than in 2002. This shows that the majority of outsiders have found stable jobs in Beijing.

People coming to Beijing from Hebei, Henan and Anhui provinces, the three main sources, take up 19.5 percent, 16.0 percent and 7.9 percent of the total respectively.

The survey shows that the residential areas for outsiders are obviously concentrated in suburban Beijing. There are 374,000 living in the city proper (Dongcheng, Xicheng, Chongwen, Xuanwu districts), 91,000 down from 2002; 2.29 million in the suburbs (Chaoyang, Fengtai, Shijingshan, Haidian districts), up 51,000; 1.431 million on the outskirts (Mentougou, Fangshan, Tongzhou, Shunyi, Changping, Daxing, Huairou, Pinggu districts and Miyun and Yanqing counties), up 269, 000 over 2002.

The educational level of those coming to the capital city, though still low, has relatively improved. Those who have only secondary school education take up 60 percent while those with a college level or above only 10.7 percent.
