US President George W. Bush agreed Wednesday to give the federal commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks two more months to produce a final report, the White House said.

The president "is pleased to support the commission's request" to extend the timetable for an additional 60 days from May 27 to July 26 this year and reduce the time period for wrapping up their work from 60 days to 30 days, White House spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.

McClellan urged the Congress to act quickly to extend the timetable, and asked the panel to present information "that can help prevent another catastrophic terrorist attack on America soil" as soon as possible.

The commission is scheduled to complete its investigation and submit its report by May 27. But late last month the commission asked for a 60-day extension to finish its job and provide the American people with a "strong and credible" report.

The White House had resisted that request for months, saying the administration wanted the panel to complete its work as soon as possible.

The commission, formally known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was set up by the Congress in late 2002 to examine a wide range of security-related issues before the Sept. 11 attacks and response to the attacks and to make recommendations on guarding against future attacks.
