Beijing to strengthen public transportation system to tackle congestion
Beijing will continue to beef up the development of its public transportation system in 2004. The capital city will accelerate to put a smart traffic system in place and gradually improve its traffic condition so that the congestion in the Fifth Ring, Wangjing, Beiyuan, Huilongguan and Zhongguancun will be eased.

As learned that Beijing will continue its policy of "public transportation first" in 2004. The efforts will be focused on the construction of the express buses with big capacity, lines for buses only, exchange stops between underground and buses on the ground. The construction of express public transportation network on the ground will be sped up. Projects for public transportation lines with big capacities will start soon at the South Axis Road, Anli road and Chaoyang road. The 16-kilometer line for public transportation along the South Axis Road is expected to be built at the end of the year.
Another 30-kilometer special lines for buses only will be added along the highways and main roads of the city, making the lines for buses only exceed 120 kilometers and a network for public traffic take shape.
