Most Russians believe no competition in presidential election: poll

Sixty-six percent of Russians believe there will be no serious competition in the upcoming March14 presidential election, which is widely believed to see a landslide victory by incumbent President Vladimir Putin, a survey released Saturday said.

The Public Opinion Foundation conducted the poll in late January. It said 18 percent of the 1,500 respondents believed the vote would be properly contested.

Twenty-two percent of those interviewed believed the lack of competition was not a bad thing for the country while 31 percent said it was bad.

Six Russian politicians will compete with President Putin in the March 14 presidential campaign.

A poll published in mid-January said nearly three-quarters of Russians would vote for another term for Putin. His nearest challenger, one of the leaders of the Motherland Party Sergei Glazyev, got 3.4 percent.
