Chinese send 9.8 bln mobile phone messages around New Year
Chinese people sent 9.8 billion Lunar New Year greeting messages through their mobile phones in the New Year's eve and week-long holiday from Jan. 22 to Jan. 28, 3 billion more than last year.

Subscribers with China Mobile sent 7.8 billion short messages, while China Unicom clients sent over 2 billion pieces.
With the popularity of camera handsets, the number of multimedia messages also climbed during the festival.
Paying 0.1 yuan for each message on the average, subscribers spent around 1 billion yuan (120 million US dollars) over the holiday.
Liu Manqiang, vice-director of Information Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said short messages were popular because of their low price and high efficiency. Meanwhile,Internet services made short message business more booming.
By the end of 2003, China had 260 million mobile phone users and the number is growing rapidly.
