Guangdong tightens checks on poultry imports and exports
All ports of south China's Guangdong Province have strengthened quarantine on imported poultry products in the wake of outbreak of bird flu in Southeast Asia.
All ports of south China's Guangdong Province have strengthened quarantine on imported poultry products in the wake of outbreak of bird flu in Southeast Asia.
The province has neither approved nor imported any poultry products from countries affected by avian influenza, said an official from the provincial quarantine department.
At Baiyun Airport, all inbound passengers are required to fill in health forms and give true accounts of what they bring with them to custom officers.
Quarantine departments have raised the number of selective examinations of inbound passengers and their luggage, and banned poultry imports from bird flu-hit areas. Poultry already shipped to Guangdong has been returned or destroyed.
Inspections of international mail and of waste discharged by foreign ships have also been strengthened.
Meanwhile, Guangdong has enhanced management on registered poultry farms for export to Hong Kong and Macao and tightened quarantine on live and frozen birds to be exported to the two regions. All motor vehicles taking poultry to Hong Kong and Macao must be washed and disinfected when they are emptied. Visitors to poultry farms must be registered.
A provincial quarantine official said poultry products shipped to Hong Kong and Macao were safe.
