China suspends poultry import from AI-hit countries and regions

China's Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, General Administration of Custom, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision and the Inspection and Quarantine jointly issued on Jan. 28 a proclamation of the nation's decision to suspend the import and export of poultry and related products from and to countries and regions hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza.

China's Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, General Administration of Custom, and the General Administration of Quality Supervision and the Inspection and Quarantine jointly issued on Jan. 28 a proclamation of the nation's decision to suspend the import and export of poultry and related products from and to countries and regions hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza. The decision is made to prevent the spread of serious animal diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza and well protect the health of the Chinese people and the safety of China's husbandry.

The proclamation says that China will, from the day the proclamation was made, suspend import of poultry and related products from the Republic of Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Pakistan and Indonesia etc. hit by highly pathogenic avian influenza. The Chinese Custom will issue another proclamation that the applications of the poultry and related products filed by the countries mentioned above will not be processed for access until the resumption of the import; China will suspend export of poultry and related products from Hunan Province, Hubei Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The Chinese Custom will not accept the applications of poultry and related products for export filed by the three bird flu-hit areas and will not process the procedure for access.

The proclamation also requires that all local departments of commerce should stop issuing licenses for automatic import of poultry products from the countries mentioned above; stop issuing licenses for export of live chickens and chicken meat from the infected Hunan Province, Hubei Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Additionally, future response to the poultry and related products from the newly infected countries and regions and domestic infected areas after the issue of the proclamation should be made according to the proclamation.
