US Secretary of State Colin Powell called on the international community Thursday to press Turkish and Greek Cypriots for a settlement on power-sharing on the divided island of Cyprus.

"I think it is time for all of us to put pressure on all sides to get a resolution to this difficult situation. It has gone on for so long and I think we are getting close to a solution," Powell told reporters after meeting Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.

He said the United States stands ready to use its offices to help all the parties move forward, "but it is UN Secretary GeneralKofi Annan's plan that we believe is the operative plan and the manner in which we move forward."

"To the extent that we can assist the secretary general in his efforts and assist all the sides in coming together on the basis of the secretary general's plan then we will do so," he added.

Annan said in Brussels on Wednesday that he still hoped that various parties could reach an agreement to reunify Cyprus before the enlargement of the European Union (EU) on May 1.

Annan, who was in Brussels for a three-day visit to the EU headquarters as a guest of European Commission President Romano Prodi, said that a peace deal should be made by March so as to leave time for a referendum on it in April.
