Over 1.1 million entries and exits have been registered by the Border Gate checkpoint of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) during the week-long Spring Festival holiday that ends on Wednesday.
Among the total number of entries and exits are more than 300,000 by businessmen and tourists from China's mainland, which showsthe Spring Festival holiday a "golden week" for Macao's tourism, according to an official from the checkpoint at the Border Gate.
A record number of 60,000 entries and exits by individual tourists from the mainland was registered on Jan. 25, said the official, adding that "with the elevation of standard of living," more and more mainland residents choose Hong Kong and Macao as destinations of their journeys.
Under the pressure of the upsurging number of travelers, the Border Gate Customs cooperated with the neighboring Zhuhai land checkpoint in taking effective measures to safeguard the security around the checkpoints and speed up the stream, he said.
It was reported that the computer system of the new Border GateBuilding is still under examination. The new building, which is able to check some 300,000 entries and exits per day, is scheduledto open on Feb. 2.
