Australia will provide 1 million Australian dollars (770,000 US dollars) to help regional organizations deal with the outbreak of the bird flu in Asia, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Thursday.
"Australia's contribution will help provide specialist medical and laboratory expertise and assistance with the destruction of affected birds," he said in a statement.
The foreign minister also said Australian officials are in discussion with regional organizations including representatives of the World Health Organization to determine immediate assistance needs.
The impact of the avian influenza on international trade and economic progress in the region could be significant, he said.
The bird flu has killed at least 10 people and the virus continues to spread quickly.
