Leading bodybuilders in Vietnam have to spend more money on food which are not really suitable to them due to the bird flu outbreak in the country, according to local newspaper Youth on Wednesday.

World champion Pham Van Mach and Vietnam's Hercules Ly Duc haveseen no chicken and eggs in their menu for the past three weeks, although chicken and eggs are considered the best for their muscular development.

"Knowing the bird flu outbreak via mass media, we are really afraid of eating chicken. To suspend chicken eating is safest," Duc said.

The bodybuilders have to resort to beef and fish which are notreally good for them. Besides, the alternatives are now more expensive than chicken and eggs.

"I used to daily spend 45,000 Vietnamese dong (VND) (2.9 US dollars) on 1.2 kilograms of chicken and 16 eggs, but now 117,000 VND (7.5 dollars) on 1.3 kilograms of beef," Duc noted.

As a result, he loses some 2.1 million VND (134.6 dollars) a month, which was about three times of his monthly salary and equalto his total incomes earned by giving lectures in bodybuilding centers.

"I ate 10,950 chickens and nearly 70,000 eggs in 10 years, which helped me to win seven Asian gold medals. My wife and chickens are behind my success," Duc said.
