Global health and agricultural safety agencies on Jan. 27 called on the international community to provide money and technical assistance to the bird flu-affected countries.
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said in a joint statement that donors should provide funds and technical assistance to these countries.
FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf said farmers in affected areas should urgently have infected poultry and other prone animals killed. He called for the provision of funds and vaccines for the countries.
The statement also called for adequate protective clothing for farmers involved in culling millions of birds, which were being bagged and buried alive.
It noted that international cooperation must be carried out in a bid to contain the spread of the disease successfully.
