A second bomb went off when reinforcements arrived after a roadside bomb exploded beside a passing US military convoy west of Baghdad on Tuesday, the US military said.
The explosion damaged vehicles and caused several casualties, military sources said.
The attack occurred in Khaldiyah west of Baghdad. A witness said he saw a US military vehicle on fire after the first blast.
As more American forces came to the scene, another bomb went off, setting fire to another vehicle, he said.
A US military spokesman only confirmed it was a "large explosion" but gave no other details.
She said Khaldiyah is in the 82nd Airborne area, whose operation also covers towns like Falluja, Ramadi where anti-American feeling is strong.
There have regular attacks on US troops in the area, and many Iraqi civilians have also been killed in the violence.
