Brazilian newspapers showed on Monday the country's disappointment with the elimination of the national soccer team in the qualification of the Athens' 2004 Olympic Games that were played in Chile.
"Humiliation takes Brazil off the Olympic," titled O Globo of Rio de Janeiro, while the Folha de Sao Paulo stressed "Gold generation fails and Brazil says good-bye to Athens."
Brazil needed a draw to qualify but lost 1-0 to the Paraguayan team.
Brazil will not participate in Olympic for the first time since1992.
The dailies also underlined the distress reactions of the players and the coach Ricardo Gomez after the game. During the press conference several cried and apologized to the Brazilian people for the failure.
"The team will not go to Athens due to mistakes outside the field but, specially, because many players did not play as expected," the reporter Paulo Cesar Vasconsuelos of the sports daily Lance! said.
Vasconsuelo refers to the problem of the coach Ricardo Gomez, who resigned on Sunday. Gomez summoned the players who play for European teams and were not authorized by their teams or the International Federation of Football Associations to join the selection that would go to Chile.
