Guangdong Province in south China has strengthened measures to ensure the safety of live poultry and fresh vegetable exports to neighboring Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since the outbreak of bird flu in some Asian countries.

The province has stepped up monitoring of registered suppliers of live poultry and supervision of bird flu inoculations at registered chicken farms.

Quarantine measures have been tightened for frozen meat and fresh vegetables to be sold to Hong Kong and Macao markets.

The provincial administration of inspection and quarantine resumed a daily report system from Jan. 19 to Feb. 5, under which sub-branches are required to report one day in advance the amount of live poultry to be sent to Hong Kong and Macao and the blood test results. The provincial administration is responsible for inspection and quarantine of 140,000 live birds to be transported to Hong Kong and Macao each day.

To date no registered suppliers of live poultry in the provincehave reported any problems. Supplies of live poultry for Hong Kongand Macao are meeting demand during the Spring Festival, the traditional Chinese lunar New Year which starts on Thursday.

Hong Kong and Macao people have a tradition of cooking chicken for festive meals. Guangdong, a traditional supplier of live poultry, is ready to provide more than 50 million chickens, 170,000 ducks, and 10,000 geese during the Spring Festival which couldlast for 15 days until the lantern festival.

The Chinese mainland has so far had no reports of bird flu, butthe epidemic has broken out in Vietnam, the Republic of Korea, andJapan. China's Ministry of Agriculture asked Monday all veterinaryand quarantine administrations to report the bird flu situation tohigher agencies every day.

If cases of bird flu are reported, all poultry within three kilometers of the site will be killed and all poultry within five kilometers of the region will be vaccinated immediately, accordingto the Ministry.

The World Health Organization has confirmed the fifth human death connected with the H5N1 virus in Vietnam.

The virus, highly contagious among chickens, is believed to spread to humans through contact with infected birds, but there have been no reports of person-to-person infection. China has listed prevention of the virus as a priority.
