An infant who was born with no skull cap died at dawn Thursday, four days after his birth in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao, the Philippine News Agency reported.

Baby boy Malikol, whose umbilical cord remained connected to his mother until his death, succumbed to severe infection arising from his exposed brain, it said.

Pagayaw Malikol, the baby's uncle, was quoted as saying that the infant was born with only a thin layer of skin covering his brain.

He said his family was not able to bring the baby and his mother to hospital anymore as they have no money to pay for possible operation.

Only a common midwife reportedly facilitated the birth of the infant.
