The Cambodian government Thursday condemned the so-called "defensive referendum" proposed by Taiwan, urging the Taiwan authorities not to take any action which would damage the regional peace and security.
The Cambodian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, "Cambodia supports the policy of unification of the People's Republic of China through 'one nation, two systems'."
Therefore, it said, the Royal Government of Cambodia "condemnsthe so-called 'defensive referendum' as proposed recently by Taiwan authorities which could lead to the independence of Taiwan."
Cambodia strongly urges "the Taiwan authorities not to take anydecision or action that could cause irreversible confrontation andthus having serious consequences for regional peace and security,"the statement said.
Cambodia has "consistently adhered to the 'one-China' policy and has always considered Taiwan as an inseparable part of the People's Republic of China" since the outset of the establishment of the diplomatic relations with China.
Cambodia and China have established full diplomatic relations in 1958. Since then, as the statement described, the two countries"have enjoyed very close relations and cooperation" on the bases of the spirit of equality, mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.
