Although no cases of bird flu have been reported on southwest China's Yunnan province border with Vietnam, the provincial government on Tuesday closed markets and banned the trade of chickens to guard against and prevent the possible occurrences of the disease.
All the 40-plus trade ports along the 1,200-kilometer border were closed and quarantine checkpoints were set up by the local stockraising administration and frontier forces, the provincial agricultural department announced.
Any chickens from Vietnam would be confiscated and burned immediately, and more than 100 chickens have been burned so far.
Meanwhile, all markets were banned from selling chickens along the border.
The province also gave preventive injections to chickens raisedin the villages. About 5 million chickens would be inoculated during Spring Festival, said the department.
The provincial government has allocated 1.5 million yuan (some 183,000 US dollars) and dispatched joint work teams to border areas to prevent emergencies.
