The Guinea-Bissau caretaker government has reached agreement with the European Union (EU) on the steps it must take in the coming months to normalize its aid and diplomatic relations with bloc.
According to a report reaching here on Jan. 20, the EU published an official statement after talks between caretaker Prime Minister of Guinea-Bissau Artur Sanha and the ambassador of EU Anne Anderson on Monday in Brussels.
The statement said that the EU "notes with satisfaction that the Guinea-Bissau government has made a positive commitment" on matters necessary to restore normal bilateral relations.
The statement said the Guinea-Bissau leader had pledged to supply detailed monthly bulletins on their progress in key political and economic areas.
The EU will continue cooperation programs with Bissau in the framework of the European Development Fund, the EU statement said.
According to the report, Sanha said he was optimistic that relations with the EU would soon be normalized and EU aid to Bissau re-established.
He said the next step to a full rapprochement with the EU would be the creation of a "transition monitoring committee," on which EU representatives would sit.
Negotiations will continue on the resumption of EU aid to Bissau under the Cotonou Accord, according to the statement.
