The confessed killer of former Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, Mijailo Mijailovic, is to receive a psychiatric examination before a local court makes a final verdict, the court announced on Monday.
Prosecutors demanded life imprisonment for Mijailovic during closing arguments in the court. Agneta Blidberg, one of the prosecutors, told the court the 25-year-old suspect had stabbed Lindh to death with premeditation.
Defense Attorney Peter Althin asked the court to order a psychiatric examination of his client, a request the prosecutors did not oppose.
The psychiatric examination will take four to five weeks and the result will be crucial to the Mijailovic's fate. The examination would delay both a verdict and sentence for at least one month.
Three days were set aside for the trial of Mijailovic. Althin requested the release of his client during the break, but the request was rejected.
Mijailovic confessed to stabbing Lindh on September 10 after hearing voices telling him to commit the crime.
Lindh, who was stabbed 10 times in a downtown Stockholm department store, was the most popular female politician in Sweden. She was tipped as a possible future prime minister.
