HK's last SARS patient discharged from hospital

Hong Kong's last convalescing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) patient was discharged from a local hospital Sunday night, said the medical authority on Jan. 19.

Hong Kong's last convalescing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) patient was discharged from a local hospital On Jan. 18 night, said the medical authority on Monday.

The patient contracted the disease last March and was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment. In August, he was transferred to Sha Tin Hospital.

The medical authority said that no new case has been reported in Hong Kong since the last confirmed case on June 2. However, in view of the SARS cases in neighboring Guangdong province, the people are urged to take precautions to prevent any possible SARS resurgence.

In a relevant development, the panel of health experts which will monitor the implementation of SARS safeguards began its first three-day meeting Monday.

The committee is to make periodic reports to the Chief Executive on the progress of implementing SARS recommendations.

The members agreed that written materials for review by the committee and records of the meeting will be posted on the Health, Welfare and Food Bureau website as soon as practicable to enhance public understanding on the work being done on SARS and public health.

Over the past weeks, measures were reinforced in Hong Kong to prevent the return of SARS. The SARS outbreak last year infected 1,755 people in Hong Kong, killing 299, including eight healthcare workers.
