Visiting Irish Foreign Minister BrianCowen on Saturday stressed the importance of carrying out the roadmap peace plan aimed at ending the protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Speaking to reporters after his talks with Arab League chief Amr Moussa, Cowen said there should be a way to stem violence between the two conflicting sides, and the right way was to make progress in implementing the roadmap.

The top Irish diplomat, whose country is holding the rotating EU presidency, said he discussed with Moussa the Palestinian-Israeli peace track, the Iraqi issue and ties between the 22-member pan-Arab forum and the European Union.

He said his current visit to Egypt was aimed at showing supportfor the roadmap peace plan envisioning a full Palestinian state by 2005.

For his part, Moussa said the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories was dangerous, and an Israeli occupation was providing fertile soil for Palestinian resistance.

The spiraling Palestinian-Israeli violence has dealt a heavy blow to the roadmap, drafted by the international quartet comprising the United Nations, the United States, Russia and the European Union.
