Construction of a new key railway station in the southwestern part of Shanghai broke ground on Saturday, according to the project managerial group.

The new railway station will be situated at Caohejing of Xuhui District and will cover an area of 60 hectares. The main facilities will include a lobby, a plaza, supporting civil works, and mail distribution and collection platforms.

The project will cost 3.38 billion yuan (about 407 million US dollars). It will be finished by late 2005 and will be put into service during the Spring Festival season of 2006.

On completion, the new station will be able to accommodate the departure and arrival of 146 trains daily, equivalent to the present accommodating capability of the Shanghai Railway Station, one of China's busiest situated in the downtown area of the city.
