Powell says Saddam reveals little 'useful intelligence'

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Friday that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was speaking to his US captors, but he had not revealed much "useful intelligence."

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Friday that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was speaking to his US captors, but he had not revealed much "useful intelligence."

"He hasn't told us a great deal," Powell said from Washington in an interview with Britain's Sky News.

"He's speaking but he hasn't given us a great deal of information or intelligence that's useful yet," Powell said, adding that Saddam "is someone who knows the trouble he's in, he knows he's going to stand trial."

"I think he's trying to protect himself and justify his despicable actions during the time that he was the dictator of Iraq," said Powell, whose comments came days after the United States announced that Saddam was a prisoner of war.

Saddam was captured by US forces on Dec. 13 in his home town of Tikrit in northern Iraq. US authorities is still interrogating Saddam at an undisclosed location in the country.

In the interview, Powell also said the search for Saddam's alleged weapons of mass destruction would go on.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Saddam Hussein had the intent, had the history of using WMDs, had the programs and, we believe, had the weapons," Powell said. "We are still looking to see if those weapons exist."

Speaking a year after presenting the case for war to the United Nations, Powell also told the Sky News that the Iraqi people were finally looking forward to a brighter future.

"The Iraqi people are looking forward to a bright future, a democracy without mass graves," Powell said.
