US national and San Jose Earthquakes striker Landon Donovan was named US soccer athlete of the year on Thursday.
Donovan, who had five goals and seven assists for the national team last year, scored 12 goals during the regular season for the Earthquakes. The 21-year-old then scored a crucial golden goal to give his club a second consecutive Major League Soccer title.
Freddy Adu, the 14-year-old who signed a contract with DC United last year and will become the youngest professional athletein more than 100 years of American team sports, was voted US soccer young male athlete of the year.
