Amid rumors about the new head coach, a senior official with Shanghai Shenhua, champions of the 2003 Chinese first division soccer league, said Thursday that it is not wise to make a haste.

Manager Lou Shifang told Xinhua that although the club had received recommendations of a number of internationally renowned coaches including Marco van Basten, a legendary figure of the Netherlands, Ajax Amsterdam and AC Milan, it remains to be seen who will get the contract before any assessment.

"Choosing a coach is not buying vegetables or clothes," Lou said. "It is too early to tell, because the decision will be crucial for the whole team and the whole season."

Former Shenhua coach Wu Jingui was named assistant to China head coach Arie Hann from the Netherlands by China Football Association (CFA) early this month.

Coaches of several other Chinese clubs, including Milorad Kosanovic of Dalian Shide and Vasili Nepomniastch of Shandong Luneng, are also reportedly on the club's list.

All applicants are expected to brief the club on their trainingand management strategies before the board of directors make the final decision, according to Lou.

Mao Yijun, a Shenhua veteran, is serving as acting head coach of the team, which is preparing for the inaugural Chinese premier league replacing the decade-long the first division.

Some 12 teams are set to vie for the crown of the new league starting in May.
