China has made a lot of progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and more efforts were needed, especially in HIV/AIDS prevention, said an official with the United Nations' China office here Wednesday.
Khalid Malik, resident representative in China of the UN Development Programme, told a group of journalists that China witnessed important progress in poverty relief, popularizing primary education and reducing child mortality, three of the eight MDGs.
The MDGs, set by world leaders at a UN summit meeting in 2000, also include promoting gender equality and empowering women, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and furthering international cooperation. Acknowledging China has contributed a lot to the HIV/AIDS fight with attention from the top leaders, Malik urged China to improve laws and regulations and eliminate bias and stoniness toward the about one million HIV carriers and AIDS patients in China.
Malik said the UNDP will continue help China to overcome its energy shortage.
The UNDP will carry out in China energy-saving pilot projects, improve energy efficiency and encourage people living in remote areas to use renewable fuels, UNDP officials said.
China was hungry for energy such as electricity and oil in 2003with its soaring economy. Malik vowed to help China to offer safe and affordable energy, especially for the general consumers.
