The Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) annual meeting agreed Wednesday in Beijing to accept Yasuhiro Nakasone's resignation from the APPF presidency, and invited him to serve as honorary chairman.

At APPF's 12th annual meeting, former Japanese Prime Minister Nakasone presented his resignation as he had retired from the Japanese Diet and should not act as a leader of the APPF, a parliamentary organization.

As an initiator of the APPF, the 86-year-old Nakasone has served as APPF president since 1993.

Participants at the meeting spoke highly of Nakasone's excellent work as APPF president over the past 12 years.

Ji Peiding, vice-chairman of the annual meeting and vice-chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the National People'sCongress of China, said Nakasone played an important role in promoting understanding, friendship and cooperation between Asia-Pacific parliaments.

Nakasone said he would continue to make suggestions and contributions to the APPF.

He said the APPF provided a platform for Asia-Pacific parliamentarians to exchange views, and all countries should strive for further development of the APPF.

The annual meeting also decided to change the arrangements for president from election to a rotating presidency being appointed by the host of the next annual meeting.
