Beijing will host 89th World Esperanto Congress in 2004

89th World Esperanto Congress will be held in Beijing from July 24 to July 31, 2004. This will be the second time that Beijing becomes the conference site for the 116-year old Esperanto. The last time was 1986 when Beijing became the host for the 71st World Esperanto Congress.

89th World Esperanto Congress will be held in Beijing from July 24 to July 31, 2004. This will be the second time that Beijing becomes the conference site for the 116-year old Esperanto. The last time was 1986 when Beijing became the host for the 71st World Esperanto Congress.

Guo Xiaoyong, Secretary General of the Preparatory Committee for 89th World Esperanto Congress, said enlisting work had begun. More than 800 Esperanto speakers from China and abroad had already signed up for the conference. It is expected that the attendance number will exceed that of 71st Esperanto Congress.

World Esperanto Congress is the grand gathering for Esperanto speakers from different parts of the world. Since the 4th congress in1908 it has been supported every time by the host government.

89th World Esperanto Congress will last a week. There will be more than a hundred items to be discussed including various working conferences, celebration activities, cultural and educational activities and theatrical performances etc.

Esperanto was an international auxiliary language invented in 1887 by a polish oculist �C Dr. Zamenhof, based on indo-European languages. It was aimed at eliminating language obstacles in international intercourse and promoting the understanding and friendship between peoples of the world. It is claimed to be "international standard language".
