Representatives attending the 12th annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) urged in Beijing Tuesday all nations to strengthen regional and international cooperation to prevent contagious diseases.

He Yehui, member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, said the Chinese government attaches great importance to the prevention of contagious diseases through active cooperation with other nations and international organizations.

She said that at present some grave contagious diseases like SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) still threaten public health and public health emergencies happen from time to time.

The SARS epidemic that happened in the spring of 2003 in some areas of China has showed the importance of international cooperation and China is willing to further such cooperation with all related sides, said He.

Hon. Prasetya, member of the Indonesian parliament, said that many contagious diseases caused global tension and threatened the life of people.

All nations should strengthen cooperation in expertise, research measures and technology, he said.

Amy Khor Lean Suan, member of parliament of Singapore, said the Asia-Pacific nations have realized the importance of international cooperation in preventing contagious disease through the SARS epidemic.

She said Singapore has set up departments to research how to prevent contagious disease, and she hoped that information could be shared with other countries.

Founded in 1993, APPF, with 27 member nations, is an important inter-parliamentary organization in the Asia-Pacific region.
