110-meter hurdler Liu Xiang and distance runner Sun Yingjie were voted Chinese athletes of the year by the country's sports journalists, according to the Chinese Athletics Association in Beijing on Jan. 12.
Liu Xiang, the 20-year-old Asian record holder, became the first Asian to take a medal at the athletics world championships as he raced to the third finish in the men's 110m hurdles in 13.23 seconds in Paris last August.
Sun Yingjie took a long overdue medal also at the world championships as she finished third in the women's 10,000 meters in 30:07.20. Sun continued her feat to win the 5,000m and 10,000m titles at the Asian championships a month later before she raced to the victory of the Beijing Marathon in October.
