Rate of Non-performing loan and remaining amount both decreased
China Banking Regulatory Commission announced Jan 11, 2004 in Beijing the rate of non-performing loan and remaining amount of the banks in China both decreased in 2003. Judging by the "line of action for default, lying idle and bad debt loan", non-performing loan of basic and foreign currency was 2400 billion Yuan till the end of 2003, which was 157.4 billion Yuan less than that at the beginning of the year. Non-performing loan rate was 15.19 percent, 4.69 percentage points down.

Remaining amount of non-performing loan in state-owned commercial banks was 1590 billion Yuan, decreasing by 131.2 billion Yuan from the beginning of the year. The non-performing loan rate was 16.86 percent, 4.71 percentage points down. Remaining non-performing loan in joint-stock commercial banks was 154 billion Yuan, a decrease of 7.7 billion Yuan from the beginning of the year. Non-performing loan rate was 6.5 percent, 3.03 percentage points less. The figures for urban commercial banks were: remaining non-performing loan 99.3 billion Yuan - a decrease of 5.8 billion Yuan, non-performing loan rate 12,85 percent - 4.87 percentage points less than the beginning of the year. And the figures for rural credit cooperatives were: remaining non-performing loan 504.9 billion Yuan - decreasing by 8.6 billion Yuan, non-performing loan ratio 29.72 percent - 7.5 percentage points less than that at the beginning of the year.
