China's Ministry of National Defense held a New Year's reception in Beijing Monday for foreign defense attaches, assistant defense attaches and their spouses.

China's Ministry of National Defense held a New Year's reception in Beijing Monday for foreign defense attaches, assistant defense attaches and their spouses.

Zhang Bangdong, director of the ministry's Foreign Affairs Office, told the reception that in 2003, the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had made remarkable achievements in army building and military reform.

The PLA's friendly and cooperative ties with its counterparts in the rest of the world had been further strengthened in 2003, he said, which has made great achievements for world peace and progress of mankind.

British Defense Attache to China James Gordon Kerr addressed the reception to express thanks to the Chinese side on behalf of all the foreign attaches and their spouses.

Cao Gangchuan, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission(CMC) of the People's Republic of China and state councilor, Xu Caihou, CMC member and director of the PLA General Political Department, Liang Guanglie, CMC member and chief of the PLA General Staff, Liao Xilong, CMC member and director of the PLA General Logistic Department, and Li Jinai, CMC member and director of the PLA General Armaments Department, were also present at the reception.
