Two held in custody in connection with deadly gas blowout

Police have held two people in custody in connection with the gas blowout that killed 243 in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and placed another three under house supervision.

Police have held two people in custody in connection with the gas blowout that killed 243 in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality and placed another three under house supervision.

The local public security has detained Wang Jiandong, an engineer from the drilling research institute of the Sichuan Oil Administration and director in charge of the No. 16 gas well in Gaoqiao Town, of Kaixian county, and Song Tao, technician of the No. 12 crew of the Chuandong Drilling Company. But the police did not say what charges the two would be facing.

Head of the No. 12 crew of the Chuandong Drilling Company Wang Jiandong, deputy driller Xiang Yiming, and vice-manager of the company Wu Hua, are under house supervision.

The tragedy occurred on Dec. 23 when the No. 16 natural gas well at the Chuandongbei gas field in Kaixian blew out releasing alarge amount of poisonous sulfurated hydrogen. The State Council has declared it an accident due to negligence.

A team from the local procuratorate has been investigating the case since Jan. 4.
