Malaysia announces cabinet reshuffle

Najib Tun Razak, the newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister, has also retained as Defense Minister in a cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday.

Najib Tun Razak, the newly-appointed Deputy Prime Minister, has also retained as Defense Minister in a cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been appointed as Agriculture Minister while Agricultural Minister Mohd Effendi Norwawi has become Minister with Special Functions at the Prime Minister's Department in the cabinet reshuffle disclosed by the prime minister at a press conference at Putrajaya near here.

The reshuffle involved three ministries -- the Finance Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.

Special Advisor to the Prime Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop has been appointed as the Second Finance Minister and Second Finance Minister Jamaludin Jarjis has taken the post of the Domestic Tradeand Consumer Affairs Minister.

Earlier, Abdullah also announced the appointment of Najib Tun Razak as Deputy Prime Minister.

It is the first cabinet reshuffle since Abdullah became Prime Minister following the retirement of his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad on Oct. 31, 2003.
