Australia has absolute confidence in China's ability to handle any SARS situation, Federal Tourism Minister Joe Hockey has said.
The Canberra Times on Wednesday quoted the minister as saying in Brisbane, Queensland, Tuesday that he visited China a month agoand is confident that Beijing would react appropriately to any SARS cases.
His remarks came just after China announced a confirmed SARS case Monday and there is another suspected case in the Philippines.
"I see it at this sate there is no threat to travel in the region," he said.
He said the major hotspots for SARS, including China, Hong KongSpecial Administrative Region of China and Singapore, are now muchbetter prepared than when the outbreak first occurred last year.
"They have extraordinary measures in place to deal with it," hesaid, adding "We have absolute confidence in the capacity of Chinaand potentially other affected countries to ensure there is no repeat (of SARS)."
