11 Chinese tennis players to compete in Australian Open

Eleven Chinese tennis players, including four top women's players, will compete in the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, which takes place later this month in Melbourne.

Eleven Chinese tennis players, including four top women's players, will compete in the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, which takes place later this month in Melbourne.

They include a men's doubles pair and four top women's players.

The Chinese players are trying to gain more professional ranking points and more spots in the Athens Olympics.

Meanwhile, China is sending five promising teenage players to compete in the junior competitions of the Australian Open, in an effort to nurture young talents for the 2008 Olympic Games.

China's best finish at the Australian Open came in 2000 when Yi Jingqian made it to the the third round of the women's singles.

This year's Australian Open will begin on January 19th in Melbourne.
