A total of 34 Filipinos have been ordered to stay at home after they were confirmed to have close contact with a Filipina who is suspected of having contracted severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS).

The 34 people are reportedly working in a government-run hospital in Laguna province south of Manila, among whom are two doctors initially treating her, Department of Health spokesman Luningning Villa told reporters Tuesday.

The quarantine term is set at 14 days, starting from Monday, Villa added.

"The woman's condition, her breathing, has slightly improved since last night," Villa said, adding that her husband, who was also isolated after showing SARS symptom, is in a stable condition as of the press time.

The authorities, however, have to wait until Wednesday for the test results to confirm whether the couple contracted SARS.

"We are trying to trace all people who had social contact with the woman from the time she had fever," said Pepito Diwajon, mayor of Luisiana town in Laguna. "We are awaiting instructions from health authorities on what to do next. We have sent vitamin C to residents and will try to disinfect the woman's house."

Local authorities have also closed an elementary school.

A separate report here quoted the World Health Organization Western Pacific regional office as saying that they are closely monitoring the woman's case but recommended a second series of tests to be conducted abroad.
