Hong Kong remains still the city of the most powerful competitiveness in China, a survey indicates.

In the "List of Competitiveness of Chinese Cities 2003"released Dec.30 by China Institute of City Competitiveness, Hong Kong still stands at top level from among 269 cities in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taipei as to their comprehensive competitiveness based mainly on the gross local economic output. Hong Kong Wenhuibao, an influential media reported.

However, the report also points out that in terms of the growth potential, Hong Kong only ranks the fifth behind Shanghai, Suzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing. Researchers responsible for the survey commented that this result reflected that Hong Kong's competitive lead was under great pressure from the cities in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong should step up cooperation with the Pearl River Delta to be the pacesetter of China's economic development.

At the press conference, Gui Qiangfang, chairman of China Institute of City Competitiveness said he thought it was of utmost importance for Hong Kong to push forward its cooperation with the cities in the Chinese mainland to make a complimentary situation. He said with a smile: " Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Zhuhai are all aspiring for being the leader in the Pearl River Delta economy. But it is not for their grab. It is exclusively reserved for Hong Kong! The aggregate GDP of several Guangzhou and Shenzhen would still be behind that of Hong Kong!"Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen still lag far behind Hong Kong in terms of economic increment, systems, talents, internationalization, and experience. In addition, Hong Kong can avail of the close trade and economic ties with the ASEAN to accelerate the merging of the Pear River Delta and other countries. So it is beyond doubt that Hong Kong can play a leading role in it.

As reported the Institute made a special research entitled "Hong Kong, still competitive?"to keep and improve the competitive edge of Hong Kong. It suggested that the SAR administration update the manufacturing sector to build Hong Kong into Asia's hi-tech manufacturing R&D hub, reshaping the Hong Kong spirit, lowering the operation costs for business and stimulating the consumption in the port city.
