President celebrates New Year with CPPCC members

Speaking at a tea party to greet the New Year in Beijing, Chinese President Hu Jintao said 2003 was a year in which China's efforts to develop a prosperous society gained a solid foundation and China's economic and social development will keep good momentum in 2004.

The Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and state leaders greeted the New Year at a tea party organized by the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Beijing Thursday, Jan. 1.

Addressing the party, Chinese President Hu Jintao extended New Year greetings to all non-Communist parties, people's organizations, people of all social sectors, compatriots in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, overseas Chinese and foreign friends who supported China's modernization drive.

Hu, who is also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission, said the Chinese people witnessed a good start in building an affluent society in 2003. Chinese people of all ethnic groups were making big strides towards the goal of building an affluent society with great confidence, said the president.

The year of 2004 would be crucial for China to realize the 10th Five Year Plan and it was important to maintain the good momentum of economic and social development, Hu said.

The president called for more efforts to maintain coordinated and sustainable development in an all-round way in the new year.

The central authorities would continue to concentrate on improving people's lives, taking more concrete measures and keeping incorruptible, said Hu.

He called on governments at all levels to spare no effort to raise farmers' incomes and create more employment opportunities. He also urged more efforts in poverty reduction and building the social security system.

Hu said China would improve its system of multi-party cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the CPC to further solidify and develop the patriotic united front.

Hu expressed the hope that the CPPCC would do a better job in democratic supervision, participate in state affairs and contribute more to the cause of building an affluent society.

Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, presided over the party and wished everyone present good health, fortune in their work and happiness.

Jia called on all CPPCC members to rally round the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as general secretary, implement the important thought of Three Represents and the essence of the 16th National Congress of the CPC, exercise the functions of the CPPCC and contribute more to building an affluent society and the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The party was attended by leading officials of the CPC, non-Communist parties, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and representatives of central government departments, all ethnic groups and professional sectors.
