The Sri Lankan government has decided to set up religious unity committees to prevent religious tension and maintain peace throughout the country, a government statement said on Wednesday.

The government's decision came in the wake of the religious tension that emerged in the country during the last few days following the demise of a prominent monk who died of a heart attack earlier this month when he was on a visit to Russia.

Extremist religious groups attacked two churches southeast of capital Colombo on Sunday, causing damages to the churches.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga has ordered stern action to be taken against anybody who tries to create violence or conspire attacks on religious places.

The government vehemently condemns the attempt to foment religious tension and clashes against the peaceful religious lifestyle, the statement said.

"To overcome this situation the government has decided to set up religious reconciliation committees throughout the country under the direction of the Ministries of Buddha Sasana, Christian Affairs, Muslim and Hindu Religious Affairs." the statement said.
