Month-long ceasefire sees violence down in India-controlled Kashmir

The month-long ceasefire between Indian and Pakistan forces along the border in the disputed Kashmir area completed Sunday, a period marked by a visible decline in the level of violence in the India-controlled Kashmir.

The month-long ceasefire between Indian and Pakistan forces along the border in the disputed Kashmir area completed Sunday, a period marked by a visible decline in the level of violence in the India-controlled Kashmir.

Not only did the border areas remain "absolutely quite", militancy-related incidents within the India-controlled Kashmir too showed 32 percent decline as compared to corresponding month last year, the Press Trust of India quoted an Indian official spokesman as saying on Sunday.

He said against 342 incidents in the one-month period starting November 26 last year, only 221 incidents were reported after the Eid ceasefire this year.

The killing of civilians had also come down significantly, the spokesman said. During the ceasefire month, militants killed 41 civilians while this number was 67 during corresponding period last year and 66 during previous month of the current year, he said.

The spokesman said 18 security personnel, including policemen, were killed during ceasefire month as compared to 30 in previous one month. In the corresponding month last year, 21 personnel werekilled, he added.

The spokesman said killing of militants had also come down - 103 militants were killed during the ceasefire month as against 142 in the previous month of this year and 127 in the corresponding month last year.

The guns along the Line of Control, International Border and Siachen Glacier fell silent on November 26, after India and Pakistan agreed on a ceasefire coinciding with Eid festival.

This is the first formal truce between the two armies since theoutbreak of militancy in the disputed Kashmir area.
