Japan is considering sending Self-Defense Forces (SDF) personnel to Iran to help relief work there following a devastating earthquake that killed more than 20,000 people, a major Japanese daily reported Sunday.
The Yomiuri Shimbun said Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has ordered the Foreign Ministry, the Defense Agency and other ministries concerned to study the mission.
The government is mulling plans to send Air Self-Defense Force C-130 aircraft to transport supplies to quake victims and dispatch medical personnel from the Ground-Self Defense Force, the newspaper said.
The use of the Maritime Self-Defense Force's transport vessels is also being eyed to transport supplies such as temporary shelters for quake victims.
Japan so far has sent SDF members abroad for disaster relief work three times -- for hurricane relief in Honduras in 1998, for quake relief operations in Turkey in 1999 and in India in 2001.
