The US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan on Saturday killed four Taliban and al-Qaida fighters immediately after the guerrillas killed an intelligence official of a southeastern province in an ambush, Afghan sources said.
About six suspected Taliban fighters ambushed the vehicle of Hayatullah, security chief of the Khost province near Khost city, the provincial capital, killing him on the spot and injuring two of his colleagues, a provincial official said.
A US military patrol team happened to arrive in the area following the attack and killed four attackers while the two others managed to escape, the official said, adding that two of the killed were believed to be Arabs.
A cleanup operation with the participation of some 2,000 US soldiers is currently being conducted by the US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan, aimed at eradicating remnants of Taliban and al-Qaida in the country's troubled southern and eastern provinces.
Coalition spokesman Bryan Hilferty said earlier that over 10 Taliban fighters had been killed in last two weeks in Operation Avalanche.
About 11,700 US-led coalition forces have been in Afghanistan to hunt down holdout fighters of the ousted Taliban and their allies since the former ruling regime collapsed in late 2001 under a US-led military campaign.
