The European Union (EU) has decided to provide 2.3 million euros (2.8 million US dollars) to Iran in immediate humanitarian aid following the earthquake in Kerman province Friday morning.
The decision was made by the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) of the European Commission (EC), the EU's executive body, under the "primary emergency aid" procedure, an EC press release said Saturday.
"The funds will be used for the provision of search and rescue teams, medical care including field hospitals, water, shelter, heating devices and other non-food items as well as for emergency coordination," it said.
This funding may be followed up by further decisions, depending on the scale of needs identified and once a more full assessment has been undertaken, it added.
The EU's humanitarian operations will be implemented through the International Federation of the Red Cross as well as other European Cross Societies.
ECHO is an EC service which funds relief to victims of natural disasters and man-made crises outside the EU.
