Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maheron Wednesday had phone talks with UN chief Kofi Annan over the stalled Mideast peace process, the official MENA news agency reported.

During the phone conversation, initiated by Annan, Maher briefedthe UN chief on the outcome of his recent visit to Israel.For his part, Annan appreciated Egypt's efforts to help settlethe protracted Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and termed Maher'strip to Israel as positive.
Annan also expressed hope that Egypt would exert more efforts tohelp the Palestinians and Israel return to the negotiating table.Maher paid a short visit to Israel on Monday for talks withIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister SilvanShalom on ways to reactivate the so-called roadmap peace plan envisioning a full Palestinian statehood by 2005.Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israelin 1979, has been playing a key mediating role in resolving theArab-Israeli conflicts.
