The death of two Japanese diplomats in Iraq in late November was the top news story of the year in Japan, according to a Kyodo News poll released Tuesday.

The Democratic Party of Japan's (DPJ) sharp gain in seats in the House of Representatives in November's general election rankedsecond on the top 10 domestic news list.

According to another poll released by Kyodo the same day, the United States-led invasion of Iraq and the capture of Saddam Hussein have been chosen as the top international news stories of 2003 by Japanese news editors.

The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which caused over 700 deaths, was next.

Kyodo News asked its own senior editors and those at member newspapers and subscribers to choose what they considered the major news items of the year, both on the international stage and in Japan.
