Mao's home province starts commemorations of his birth
An exhibition of photographs of people and landscapes of Shaoshan City, hometown of former Chinese leader Mao Zedong, opened Monday in his home province of Hunan, launching a series of activities to mark the 110th anniversary of his birth on Dec. 26.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Chinese Photographers Association and related departments of Hunan Province, featured the works of nearly 1,000 professional and amateur photographers from 15 provinces, autonomous regions and cities.
Organizers said some photographers stayed through the night to get the best possible shots of Mao's home, while others leased balloons for a bird's eye view.
The commemoration activities will include seminars, the openingof Mao's memorial, the exhibition of Mao's badges and a concert featuring Mao's poems.
