In its first major operation against militants since the Indo-Pak ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian security personnel Sunday foiled an infiltration bid, killing six militants in Poonch District, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Army personnel reportedly detected a group of militants moving along the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote area of Mendhar sub-sector in Poonch District around 4:30 a.m. and immediately cordoned off the area by deploying additional troops.

Unaware of the army moves, a group of around eight to nine militants walked straight into the cordoned area, officials were cited as saying, adding that the militants attacked the defense personnel by "opening indiscriminate firing and lobbing grenades."

In a fierce gun battle that broke out, six militants were killed while two Indian soldiers received minor injuries.

"Two to three militants, still holed up in the cordoned area, are engaged in the gun battle with the troops," the sources were quoted as saying.

This was the first major infiltration bid by militants since a ceasefire came into force in Jammu and Kashmir from November 26 this year, according to PTI.
