India and Pakistan on Friday agreed to resume passenger and freight train services between the two countries next month, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

The two sides made the agreement for the resumption of rail services after two days of talks between officials of the two nations in New Delhi.

"Samjhauta Express and freight services will resume with effect from January 15, 2004 as per the earlier timetable," said the agency quoting a statement issued at the end of the talks.

The trains would remove from Atari in India's northern state of Punjab to Lahore in Pakistan.

The train services were suspended on Jan. 1, 2002 after the December 2001 attack on India's Parliament. India accused Pakistan-based militant groups of involvement in the attack.

The resumption was one of the recent steps that the two South Asian nations have taken toward peace, including the declaration of a cease-fire along the Line of Control in Kashmir and an agreement to resume air links.
